TifSport
If you’re involved in the installation or day to day maintenance of golf courses, athletic fields, parks, ovals, home lawns or commercial properties, you’ll really appreciate how certified TifSport can be the best grass for your requirements. TifSport makes a dense, luxurious, dark green turf. Be sure to ask for TifSport by name.
Description
Dark Green Colour
TifSport has a dark emerald green colour versus the somewhat lighter green of Tifway, Greenlees and Wintergreen.
Upright Leaf Blade Orientation
TifSport’s leaf blade orientation and stiffness is being praised by many golf courses superintendents. They feel TifSport gives a better ball lie in cut fairways and roughs.
Impressive Leaf Texture
TifSport has a finer texture than most other grasses used on fairways and tees. This also helps promote good footing for sports where grip running is important.
Closer Mowing Heights
After three-times-per-week mowing at 4mm, research conducted at Tifton GA shows that TifSport can tolerate closer mowing heights than Tifway and Mildron. Turf density was excellent.
Good Lateral Growth
TifSport is more aggressive than genetically pure Tifway especially during the cool winter months. This aggressive lateral growth ensures TifSport’s rapid grow-in repair time.
Superior Turf Strength
TifSport has superior turf strength. This translates into improved playing conditions and resistance to divot injury from golf and boot-tags in football, soccer, hockey and other field sports.
Drought Tough
TifSport developer Wayne Hanna has data from a 2 year study showing that TifSport has good drought tolerance. It not only stays green longer, but it also recovers faster.
Vigorous Root System
This inside view of a typical TifSport plug shows Tif Sport’s impressive root system, stolons and rhizomes.
Varietal Purity
TifSport’s on-going purity is carefully controlled by a rigorous set of rules and guidelines.
Excellent Traffic Tolerance
TifSport’s density, turf strength and good lateral growth rate gives it a high ranking for traffic tolerance. Field and golf course superintendents are reporting outstanding regrowth from normal wear and tear.
Background & Breeding
TifSport was developed by USDA/ARS geneticist Dr Wayne Hanna at the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tefton, Georgia.
This is the same breeding program initiated by Dr Glenn Burton, the program responsible for Tifgreen, Tifdwarf, TifEagle and Tifway 419, the longtime standard for sports fields, golf courses and home lawns.
Dr Hanna and his team set out to develop a grass that was superior to Tifway, partly in concerns over Tifway’s genetic vulnerability. Dr Hanna was in search for a grass with greater cold tolerance, greater pest and disease resistance and greater resilience under demanding sporting conditions. Dr Hanna states: “We identified a number of characteristics that we felt were key for athletic fields and golf courses, as well as high end landscapes and lawns. We wanted a grass with superior colour, cold-hardiness and disease resistance. We also felt that a rapid recovery from injury was vital, so we concentrated on turf density, turf strength and turf quality. TifSport also had to be able to recover quickly from day-in-day-out abuse”.
TifSport has excellent cold tolerance, colour, texture and density. It has proven to establish aggressively and greens up earlier in Spring. After 16 years of evaluation, research, trials and location usage it has been proven that TifSport performs to the standards it was bred for.
TifSport is protected by a USDA patent and as a further safeguard, can only be sold as genetically certified turf or sprigs by a licensed Australian producer.
If you are looking for a certified Bermudagrass that can stand up to the wear and tear of boots, tags, golf divots and other sporting demands, relax, you’ve found it - TifSport. It’s what many experts are calling “the new standard in sports turf for the 21st century”.
