Aeration

Aeration is needed for lawn care, is only necessary when the soil becomes so compacted that neither, water or nutrients can reach the roots of the plant. This is accomplished with machinery that will pull plugs out of the lawn which will let air in. You can aid this process with a good watering the day before, but avoid making the soil loose and muddy.

Aerate Where Needed

Some times more than a single pass of the aerator is needed to accomplish the task. It is important to note, you should mark the location of any sprinkler heads before you aerate to avoid damaging them. You can accomplish this by renting the equipment or hiring a professional to do it for you. Any plugs removed can be left on the lawn to return the nutrients back to the soil.

Type of Grass is a factor

The type of grass in your lawn will once again play a role here. A lawn of warm season grass is best aerified in the late spring or early summer, when they are actively growing. Warm season grasses would include couch grasses and Sir Walter. Remember, don’t aerate if the soil is too wet. If it sticks to your shoes or if your plugs stick to your probes, then you will want to wait until the soil dries out a bit.
