Turf Tips: Top dressing your lawn

A great spring turf tip for a healthy lawn is top dressing your lawn. The growing season of spring and summer is the perfect time to give your lawn a new lease of life. If your lawn is even, healthy and well fertilised then it doesn’t need top dressing.

Topdressing to address uneven lawns and holes.

We all make sure we fill our divots when we play golf but we don’t always think the same way with our lawns, and not addressing uneven turf not only affects the beauty of your lawn but also creates problems with mowing especially leading to more scalping and uneven growth.
By correcting uneven lawns regular maintenance especially mowing will be easier and you will have a happier and healthier lawn.

How to top dress your lawn

  1. Its best to fertilise around 2 weeks before you top dress to prepare your lawn
  2. Freshly wow the area to be top dressed taking off 1/3 of the leaf
  3. Spread the top dress over the area using a lawn leveller to a depth of 10-13mm
  4. Water in well and apply more fertiliser

Important tip: For deeper depressions (5cm or more) don’t bury the grass, lift your lawn and put the top soil underneath to elevate your lawn.

Top dressing your lawn for nutrients

You can apply a layer of top dress to give your lawn a boost of nutrients and encourage new shoots resulting in a thicker lawn while also hindering weed infestations.

This will deliver fresh nutrients to your lawn and will also help allow the soil to retain moisture during the drier weather ahead.
