Now is the perfect time to prepare your lawn for the holiday period; with the school year winding down and the Summer holiday nearly upon us, this means your lawn is about to get a big workout. Whether it’s family BBQ’s, backyard cricket or just the kids running around enjoying the longer days.
Now will be the time that your lawn gets the most use. Summer is a stressful time for your lawn as heavy foot traffic, heat and dry weather are all major stresses for your lawn so preparing for Summer is vital to get your lawn nice and healthy for the months ahead.
We have all been guilty of trying to save time and mow less by mowing short, but for a healthy lawn, longer is better. Taller grass is more adept at getting more moisture from the soil as its roots dig deeper. The optimal mowing height guidelines are 20-40mm for Sir Grange Zoysia (at the higher end for shady areas), 30-50mm for Sir Walter DNA Certified, 20-40mm for TifTuf Bermuda and 15-30mm for Nullarbor Couch.
This is especially important for your Summer prep and you get your lawn ready for the warmer weather ahead. It’s also a great time to check your mower blades, blunt blades can cause damage to the plant and impede the recovery of the turfgrass, damaging the plant it can also start issues like fungicides and diseases. Get some nice and sharp blades on your mower to ensure a nice and clean cut.
As the weather warms up your lawn will be a little thirstier than in cooler months. Changing your watering schedule now is important for having a healthy lawn through Summer. It’s most important to water deeply, giving your lawn a good soak. This again helps develop a deeper root structure making your lawn much stronger.
A great way to measure how much water your lawn is getting is marking on the side of a container and putting the container on your lawn under the sprinkler. For Nullarbor Couch and Sir Walter DNA Certified we recommend 25mm and for the TifTuf Bermuda and Sir Grange 10mm. Then set a timer and measure how long it takes to reach that mark. You then know how long to leave your sprinkler in one place for a nice deep watering.
If you haven’t already given your lawn a boost of fertiliser, the last piece of Summer prep advice is to grab a good quality slow release fertiliser and give your lawn some food!
Applying fertiliser now sets your lawn up well for the coming months, giving it the nourishment required for the growth that is around the corner. If you plan on aerating or top dressing your lawn, you should be applying fertiliser at least a week or two before you take on these more serious tasks. You can pick up our premium Lawn Solutions Fertiliser, perfect for any lawn. This can be purchased from our online store or from our office at Acacia Ridge.
