Heatwave lawn care

Heatwave lawn care

With a heatwave sweeping through South East Queensland here are some timely heatwave lawn care tips for managing your lawn.

The best defence is preparation

Australia is often a land of extremes and the weather is no exception, heatwaves are a big part of this through the summer months.

While there are a couple of things you can do to help manage the stress on your lawn through these extreme events really the best defence is preparation. The healthier your lawn is the easier it will cope with extreme events.

This is where all of the spring tips we recently mentioned come into play, by aerating, fertilising and deep watering your lawn especially in the lead up to summer your lawn will have the best chance to get through extreme weather like a heatwave.

So our best turf tip for any extreme event is to make sure you are taking care of your lawn all year round which will give you a healthier, stronger and of course much better looking lawn.

It’s not too late to start

If you maybe haven’t got round to all of your spring lawn care yet all is not lost, you can still do a couple of things to help your lawn get through a heatwave.

#1. Morning water

With long hot days ahead getting plenty of water on your lawn in the morning is the best turf tip to give your lawn the boost it needs to ride out a heatwave. Any watering in the middle of the day will be mostly lost to evaporation, and night watering increases the risk of disease.

If you don’t want to get up early just get a cheap water timer and let the timer take care of it for you.

#2. Reduce stress

A heatwave is a high stress event for your lawn, just like if you were to stand outside in the sun all day during the heatwave. Reducing any further stress is vital to the health of your lawn.

Mowing your lawn is a huge stress on your lawn, but if your backyard is a jungle you might have no choice but to mow during a heatwave.

Mow early or don’t mow at all. You want to stay off your lawn as much as possible in the hottest part of the day so it can focus all its energy on getting through the day.

Sharpen those blades! Blunt mower blades tear at the blades of your grass creating even more stress than the cutting, a nice sharp blade makes a cleaner cut reducing the stress of the mow.

Our turf especially our DNA Certified Sir Walter and the new TifTuf Bermuda are VERY drought tolerant and is perfect for these wild conditions, but a little bit of extra care will ensure your lawn looks its best despite the heatwave and wild weather in general.
