Why dethatch your lawn?
Thatch is a build-up of dead grass and root systems in your lawn. Thatch is a normal and crucial part of any lawn, providing protection for your lawn from traffic. But, when built up it will cause havoc to a happy and healthy lawn.
When your thatch levels are built more than 25mm this will stop your lawn from getting the nutrients it needs. Key things such as air and water will be stopped from reaching where it is needed most. Thick layers of thatch will also allow more attacks from fungi and pests.

Dethatching your lawn
Basic dethatching method: mower
A simple method of dethatching your lawn is with a mower. Set your mower to a lower setting, low enough to scalp your lawn. Once this has been done we would recommend using a rake to remove the thatch and to remow the surface to collect extra dead lawn matter.
After scalping, apply a slow-release fertiliser such as Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser and water in. This fertiliser is suitable for all turf varieties. Alternatively, we suggest applying a pre-emergent fertiliser like OxaFert. This method is perfect for varieties such as Sir Walter DNA Certified as its thatch layer and runners are above the soil level.
Professional dethatching method: lawn dethatcher or scarifier
You can hire professional lawn care equipment such as a lawn dethatcher or scarifier from your local equipment hire shop.
These are perfect for varieties like सर ग्रेंज, टिफटफ and नलरबोर काउच as they have underground runners. Though you can also use a dethatcher or scarifier on Sir Walter DNA Certified, making sure not to go too low.
