What is Nut Grass?
Nutgrass is an unpleasant weed that is part of the sedge family. It gets its name because of the nut-like tubers found at the roots of the plant.
Nutgrass is quite easy to identify because of its standing out nature. It usually sits higher than the rest of your lawn, is usually a lighter green, is triangular in cross section and has 3 blades that shoot up from a single stem.
Where does it come from?
Nutgrass can remain in inactive soils for a long period of time. The addition of nutrients and water to your soil can make dormant nuts within the soil to start to grow.
How do I treat Nutgrass
Nutgrass is treatable! It is best to act quick before it spreads and becomes impossible to get rid of. If you have a small amount, you can remove nutgrass by digging it out with a small spade, making sure that there are no roots or bulbs left in the soil.
If you have a great amount of nutgrass you will need a Selective Herbicide such as Amgrow Sedgehammer. Another spectacular product that you can use that controls a wide variety of broadleaf weeds is Monument by Syngenta.
Though these products might seem on the expensive side, small quantity applications outweigh this price drastically. Repeated applications of these products may also be required.
