Preparing for lawn grubs

Preparing for lawn grubs

Mostly active from October until May, it is now the time of the year when lawn grubs come out to play. It is important to keep an eye on the signs and stay vigilant as the weather warms up.

Signs of lawn grubs

Knowing the signs before they are widespread in your lawn will be key to keeping your lawn healthy.

Patchy and brown or bare patched are tell-tale signs of an infestation in your lawn. It is also important to keep an eye out for white moths, white egg sacs around your house (on fences, foliage, furniture and eaves) increased bird activity and lawn grub predators such as orange or black wasps.

Lawn grubs are likely to infest a well-maintained lawn. Couch lawns are more susceptible to lawn grub attacks and whilst Sir Walter DNA Certified is a more resilient variety it is also vulnerable to attack.

How to treat lawn grubs

Preparing for lawn grubs

If you are not a fan of using chemicals on your lawn to get rid of lawn grubs, there is a way to do so. You can use a wet hessian bag over an affected area. Lawn grubs will attach themselves to it overnight then allowing you to get rid of them the morning after.

For a chemical approach, you can use Grub Killa. The active ingredient of Grub Killa is Befenthrin, it is toxic to most insects and is safer than other pest control options.

Spraying tips

  1. Spray in the afternoon.
  2. Spray a second application 7-10 days later.
  3. If rain is likely, wait until the weather is clear as you will need to reapply otherwise.
  4. Read the label and apply at the correct application rate.
  5. Use fertiliser on any brown patches to help bring it back.
