Golf in Australia is about to change forever,
and it’s all in the grass!

After conquering the almost immeasurable demands of the Rio Olympic golf site, and becoming the grass of choice for Tiger Woods featuring on his Bluejack National course, Zeon Zoysia has finally arrived on Australian golf courses under the brand Sir Grange zoysia.

Loved by course superintendents and demanded for by players, Sir Grange zoysia’s low inputs and amazing tee like lies have quickly made it an on course favourite. With Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and even Michael Jordan choosing Sir Grange for their courses, its no wonder the best clubs in Australia are now looking at Sir Grange.

The days of having only one variety of grass to choose for your lawn are long gone. Sir Walter DNA Certified first showed us just how special a lawn can be, and now TifTuf and Sir Grange zoysia are pushing the boundaries even further. Sydney’s prestigious Killara Golf Club was the first Sir Grange course renovation on Australian soil. After decades of attempting to remedy some troublesome areas turf consultant John Neylan recommended a new zoysia grass in a 2016 report. Course superintendent Ryan Fury investigated further, eventually convincing the board to trial Sir Grange zoysia in those troublesome areas.

Sir Grange is the members favourite grass

Members of courses that have made the switch to Sir Grange zoysia have seen their handicaps tumble thanks to the grasses amazing playability. This was summed up best when Golf.com wrote “The ball nearly always sits right on top of the grass, begging to be hit”.

Players at The Golf Club of Texas voted with their wallets after their switch to Sir Grange in August 2015. The club sold 800 memberships by the end of 2015, with their projection of 1000 memberships by the end of 2016 easily surpassed in the first quarter of 2016 instead.

Thanks to its unique blade density Sir Grange is renowned in the industry as the most playable fairway turf in the market. Mike Davis from the USGA explained why members love it so much, “It’s a very golfer-friendly grass that allows the average player to get the club under the ball.”

It’s not just the amateur golfers singing its praises either, PGA Tour player Jimmy Walker is a resident member at the Sir Grange turfed Cordillera Ranch in Texas. “It is a world-class playing surface that provides superior lies, excellent feedback on ball-striking” Walker said.

It’s not just players that love this grass

The real reason Sir Grange graced the Rio Olympic course was its ability to thrive under the strict environmental regulations that were in place on the site. The course sits on a nature reserve so the use of chemical fertilisers and weed killers was prohibited. Sir Grange requires less water, fertiliser, nitrogen and pesticide that other varieties, which helped it meet the challenge of the strict regulations combined with Rio’s poor soil and water quality.

These lower inputs required combined with requiring less frequent mowing can see huge savings in maintenance costs. Aaron Patton’s report for the USGA tabled projected savings of over 50% on an annual basis. Director of Club Operations at The Golf Club of Texas Ruffin Moore shaved $100,000 off of their original course maintenance budgeting projections. “In short, we’ll save on mowing frequency, water, chemicals and fertilizer. We’ll use less of everything,” Moore said.

A Brisbane solution for a Sydney course

When Sydney’s Killara Golf club made the decision to go with Sir Grange, their next big decision was where to source the grass from. With the volume required a producer who could delivery on such large quantities had to be found. The more favourable climatic conditions found in South East Queensland, giving producers in this area the ability to produce more Sir Grange much faster.

This search for the right producer led Superintendent Ryan Fury all the way to Brisbane, where the climatic advantage combined with a fearless commitment to innovation made Jimboomba Turf the perfect partner for this project. To manage the mammoth task of transporting a premium product over 900km, significant investment was made in cold chain management, with purpose built refrigerated equipment joining their company owned fleet.

Temperature tracking equipment was used to monitor the grass in transit and ensure it was always arriving in pristine condition, as is required for a prestigious course like Killara Golf Club. The planning of the entire process was so precise that every single one of the more than 60 truckloads arrived within a 10 minute window.

Such a huge logistical exercise, that delivered such a wonderful result for the client, is a testament to Jimboomba Turf’s mission. To leverage their unmatched 45+ years’ experience to deliver innovative green solutions.
