Sir Grange Zoysia Vs. TifTuf Bermuda

This week’s blog post, we thought we would discuss the differences between two of our favourite turf varieties, Sir Grange Zoysia and TifTuf Bermuda. Before we compare these varieties, let’s go through them.

Sir Grange Zoysia

Sir Grange

Sir Grange Zoysia is an absolute gem when it comes to turf varieties. Crisp, clean and green it is the absolute cream of the crop.

Sir Grange Zoysia has a super dark fine leaf blade, high shade tolerance and low water requirements. It is slow-growing, requires as little as 50% less mowing and 75% less fertiliser than other varieties. It truly is the ultimate luxury lawn of all the grass varieties recommended by leading professional turf producer body, Lawn Solutions Australia.

TifTuf Bermuda

TifTuf Bermuda

TifTuf Bermuda grass is a fine leafed turf variety. Hand picked from almost 30,000 varieties, it went through 25 years of research and development before coming to the Australian market.

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda Grass has low water usage making it perfect for water restrictions. It requires 38% less water than other similar varieties (after establishment), has high wear tolerance, mild shade tolerance and a perfect winter colour. TifTuf Bermuda is the first and only grass variety to receive the Smart Approved WaterMark in Australia.

The fine blade of the TifTuf lawns is perfect for South East Queensland’s climate conditions. It’s one of the grass types used for both commercial and residential lawn use. Its superior performance has seen it chosen for high profile projects including the New Farm Park dog off-leash area and at Southbank’s favourite; the Brisbane sign.

Water:

TifTuf takes the win on this one. TifTuf Bermuda requires 38% less water than other similar turf varieties. Sir Grange also has low water requirements and has a deep root structure that is perfect for water usage but cannot match the performance of TifTuf.

However, if superior drought tolerance is your only criteria, you should also consider another Lawn Solutions Australia variety; Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo, another of the star warm season grasses that shows superior drought tolerance.

In fact, when comparing the medium drought tolerance of Sir Grange lawn and the very high drought tolerance of TifTuf vs Sir Walter:

  • Sir Walter DNA certified is a soft leaf buffalo grass that carries the reputation of being drought tolerant.
  • Sir Walter DNA is considered to have high drought resistance. However, the TifTuf Turf will still perform better when considering drought tolerance.
  • In addition, Sir Walter DNA Certified buffalo will need frequent watering until it is established. It’s only after this time that its drought tolerance is evident, whether it has direct sunlight or not.

Wear/recovery:

TifTuf takes the win. TifTuf Bermuda has stupendous recovery and can handle high wear situations. Sir Grange also has great wear which is why it is exemplary for golf courses.

Mowing:

If you hate mowing weekly, Sir Grange is the perfect turf variety. Sir Grange requires as little as 50% mowing and can also be left lusciously long.

Shade:

If you have overhanging trees and shade is an issue in your yard, Sir Grange is perfect.
