Taking Care Winter Weeds

Obviously, during the colder months grass doesn’t grow like it does in the summer months. While this means less lawn care it can also give way to winter weeds. The best thing to do is to keep this from happening in the first place. Taking care of your lawn now means less compaction when the rains are heavy and less headache later on. But if you do see some weeds creeping in there are some things you can do.

Getting Rid of Them

Take care of those winter weeds promptly. If not they will germinate and the seeds will spread into the soil and then come spring you are really going to be in for it. Different weeds require different treatments. Here are some of the more common ones you will see and what you can do.

BINDI, BROAD LEAF WEEDS & CLOVER

Sir Walter Buffalo Weed Control is an excellent choice in treating these three weeds. It works on all kinds of lawns. You can use it on buffalo lawn except in the case of the ST lawns. It is also safe for your on couch and kikuyu. Another good option is Lawn Lovers Buffalo Weed Control.

Winter Grass Invasion

Just like weeds you want to head off the invasion of winter grass before it germinates and spreads seeds. And when this stuff comes back it does so with a vengeance! You really want to get rid of it as soon as you can. You can actually pull this up by hand. The roots are shallow and there are no runners. You can spray and a good choice is Amgrow Winter Grass Killer. It’s safe on Sir Walter buffalo, common couches and blue grass. If you have a Kikuyu lawn you won’t want to spray it on there.

Nutgrass and Other Sedge Weeds

Mulliubimby Couch and Nutgrass belong to the Sedge weed family and can quicly become invasive. Sempra or Amgrow Sedgehammer are going to be excellent choices for killing off these grasses. It can be a bit more expensive than some others but you use less. The cost of getting rid of them now is nothing compared to what it will cost if these grasses take over your lawn.

Getting Rid of Onion Weed

This is a terrible weed to deal with and one you don’t want to remove by hand. When they are pulled up the little bulbs are detached and spread. There also is no selective herbicide that works on this so you can’t do a general spraying. You have to spot weed. What you will need to do is mix water and Glyphosate either in a weed wand or a bowl. Add in a drop of dishwashing liquid. This will help dissolve the waxy coating on the plant so the solution is able to penetrate the leaf. Using your weed wand or a brush you want to paint the solution on the onion weed. Do not get it on the grass around. It will kill anything it touches.

Get the Right Tools for the Job

Remember, the right tools make any job easier. A pressure sprayer will make spraying large areas much easier and a spot weeding wand will come in hand for many things. Use your tools wisely and follow the directions for each herbicide. Use the dilution rate recommended. More is not better! You can kill your lawn by upping the amount needed.
