Taking Care of Winter Weeds

Taking Care of Winter Weeds

During colder months grass doesn’t grow like it does in the warmer months of Summer. While this means less lawn care it can also give way to Winter weeds. The best thing to do is to keep this from happening in the first place.

Taking care of your lawn now means less compaction when the rains are heavy and less headache later on. But if you do see some weeds creeping in there are some things you can do.

Getting rid of them

Weeds

Take care of Winter weeds promptly. If not they will germinate and seeds will spread into the soil and then come during Spring.

Different weeds require different treatments, here are some of the more common weeds and how you can fight them.

Winter Grass invasion

Wintergrass

Just like weeds you want to head off, the invasion of Winter grass before it germinates and spreads seeds. When this stuff comes back it does so with a vengeance! You really want to get rid of it as soon as you can.

You can actually pull this up by hand, the roots are shallow and there are no runners. You can spray these also with Amgrow Winter Grass Killer. It’s safe to use on Sir Walter DNA Certified, common couches and bluegrass. If you have a Kikuyu lawn you will not want to spray it on there.

Another option is to apply Lawn Solutions Oxafert. Oxafert is a pre-emergent herbicide that kills Winter grass before it appears.

Nutgrass and Other Sedge Weeds

Nutgrass

Mullumbimby Couch and Nutgrass belong to the sedge weed family and can quickly become invasive. Sempra or Amgrow Sedgehammer are going to be excellent choices for killing off these grasses.

They can be a bit more expensive than some others but you will use less. The cost of getting rid of them now is nothing compared to what it will cost if these grasses invade your lawn.

Getting rid of Onion Weed

Onion Weed

This is a terrible weed to deal with and one you don’t want to remove by hand. Similar to nutgrass, when they are pulled up the little bulbs are detached and spread.

There also is no selective herbicide that works on this so you can’t do general spraying, you will have to spot weed.

What you will need to do is mix water and glyphosate either in a weed wand or a bowl. Add in a drop of dishwashing liquid. This will help dissolve the waxy coating on the plant so the solution is able to penetrate the leaf.

Using your weed wand or a brush you want to paint the solution on the onion weed. Do not get it on the grass around as it will kill anything it touches.

Get the right tools for the job

Get the right tools

Remember, the right tools make any job easier. A pressure sprayer will make spraying large areas much easier and a spot weeding wand will come in hand for many things.

Use your tools wisely and follow the directions for each herbicide. Also follow the recommended application rate. More is not better!
