In this week’s article, we are here to talk about common lawn weeds. We will be going through some of the weeds we encounter when talking to customers and giving you some handy tips to help fight or remove them.
Crowsfoot grass
Crowsfoot grass is an annual summer weed with dark green flattened stems and straplike leaves. It produces seed-head with two to ten spikelets on a long stem and will seed from Spring through to Autumn.
The best way to control Crowsfoot Grass is to hand remove juvenile weeds. Or to use a pre-emergent such as Oxafert which prevents seed germination.
Capeweed
Forming in Winter, Capeweed is rose-shaped with deep lobed leaves and has a white underside. Capeweed has many small flowers with a black disc with creamy white florets.
It is best to hand weed Capeweed ensuring the entire taproot is removed. Alternatively Capeweed can be removed with Amgrow Bin-Die.
Summergrass
Rooting at nodes Summergrass is typically purple in colour and has broad leaves that are rolled within a sheath. Seedhead will appear in late Summer to Autumn. As 2-10 branches (depending on species) on a singular stem.
Summergrass can be removed by hand or it can be prevented with Oxafert.
Nutgrass
A continual plant with triangular stems in a cross-section. Nutgrass has underground tubers that are difficult to remove physically. When seeding, brown seeds are produced in spikelets on an umbrella-like arrangement.
We do not recommend removing nutgrass by hand, as more will spawn. Nutgrass can only be removed with a specific herbicide such as Sedgehammer or with Monument.
Wintergrass
A tufted annual grass with light to dark green leaves. Wintergrass will emerge from Autumn through to Spring and can persist all year round. It will emerge quickly after germinating, producing various amounts of seed that can be distributed by wind, water and traffic.
Wintergrass can be removed by hand or it can be prevented with Oxafert or Monument.
Dandelion
Dandelion is a stemless, rose-shaped weed. Dandelions are deeply lobed with inverted leaves and yellow flowers. Seeds are formed in a puff ball-like globe and can be carried in the wind.
We recommend to prevent Dandelion from seeding making sure to remove all taproot material during hand weeding. You can also use Amgrow Bin-Die to help remove Dandelion.
Mullumbimby Couch
Bindii is a low growing rose-shaped weed. It roots at the nodes to create additional rose shapes. Leaves are twice divided into segments, resembling tiny carrot leaves. As it dies off in Spring, seeds harden into sharp burrs which can be painful to walk on.
We recommend using Amgrow Bin-Die or Monument but you can also remove Bindii by hand or using a selective herbicide.
Bindii
Bindii is a low growing rose-shaped weed. It roots at the nodes to create additional rose shapes. Leaves are twice divided into segments, resembling tiny carrot leaves. As it dies off in Spring, seeds harden into sharp burrs which can be painful to walk on.

Cudweed, everlasting
Cudweed is a biennial or annual winter weed that forms from the base that is rose-shaped with green leaves and is silvery-white in colour. Cudweed has varying seasonal flowering habits and will flower from mid-Spring to early Summer and in Autumn. Cudweed flowers can be pink, brown or purple.
Amgrow Bin-Die can be used to remove Cudweed.
White Clover
White Clover is a low growing creeping long-lasting weed with green leaves. Leaves are heart-shaped with serrated margins and a central ring around the base of each leaflet. White Clover has white paper-like flowers and will emerge during Spring and Autumn, attracting bees.
You can hand remove or use a selective herbicide suitable for your grass variety to get rid of White Clover. It also can be removed with Amgrow Bin-Die or Monument.
