Before you start  you will need: weed killer; rotary hoe or garden fork, tape measure, rake, fertiliser, soil spreader and a shovel.

The first step to prepare for a new lawn is to remove any existing vegetation. Spray existing grass and weeds with Roundup (or similar) then wait until existing vegetation dies (7-10 days). A second application may be required. Remove all debris including any rocks stones and twigs.

 Step 2. Cultivate the area

The next step is to cultivate the area to allow the root system of your new turf to penetrate the existing soil. Use a rotary hoe to cultivate the whole area. Otherwise, you can dig it over thoroughly with a garden fork to a depth of about 100mm. Remove any rocks, stones or sticks as you dig.

Check levels and ensure that the turf will not sit proud of footpaths, driveways or garden edges. The surface must be 75mm below the weepholes/Termimesh. Give the surface a light rake over to remove all footprints and impressions.
