With our expanding range of turf grasses a question we have been asked a lot lately is “Why choose a premium turf grass for your lawn.” With changing yard sizes and lifestyles customers have far more specific needs for the turf grass they choose for their lawn. Here are a few examples of how the advantages of some of our premium turf grass varieties can make your life easier and your yard look fantastic year round.
We all lead busy lives now and many of our customers would like to spend less time mowing. The secret to less mowing is a slow growth rate. You need a grass variety that grows as slowly as possible vertically while maintaining a healthy green leaf.
Sir Grange zoysia is our newest variety with a very slow vertical growth rate. Sir Grange still grows fast enough to cover worn patches and self-repair, but grows very slowly vertically. This means less mowing as your lawn takes longer to start to look unkept. Another advantage of this slow growth rate is low fertiliser usage. While we suggest fertilising other varieties at least 3 times a year, Sir Grange can be fertilised just once a year.
With rising water costs many customers are worried about the ongoing cost of keeping a lawn looking its best. The holy grail of grasses for lawns and sporting fields is a grass that uses less water to stay healthy.
TifTuf Bermuda was tested extensively at the University of Georgia and showed great promise in drought stress trials. This testing went on to prove that TifTuf uses 38% less water than some other varieties. It still requires a strict watering schedule during establishment, but once established the water required to keep a TifTuf lawn will be far less than other similar varieties.
With the savings that can be made on your water bills your TifTuf lawn will practically pay for itself. And using less water doesn’t mean this isn’t a dynamic turf grass. It still shows excellent performance in shade and wear tolerance and can be mowed to number of different heights. Its tight knit makes it perfect for manicured lawns.
Great in the shade
With house blocks getting smaller and houses getting bigger the greatest problem facing modern lawns is shade. With traditional couch grasses requiring 6 or more hours of sun a day, they struggle in the modern backyard.
DNA Certified Sir Walter is the elder statesman of our premium turf grass varieties, and has proven again and again its superiority in difficult conditions. Its broad leaf blade allows it to gather more energy from less sunlight making it perfect for shaded areas. In especially shaded areas mowing your Sir Walter a little longer can help it perform even better.
Another great characteristic of Sir Walter is its ability to choke out weeds. It combines strong horizontal growth with year round performance beating back weeds time and time again. Its tight thatch ensures weeds rarely get a chance to establish in a healthy Sir Walter lawn.
Fit for purpose
The biggest advantage of our stable of premium turf grasses is you can mix and match your specific requirements to find the grass that is PERFECT for your specific situation.
Pets and active family? Look for high wear tolerance. Small yard with high fences and tall home? Be sure to look for high shade tolerance. Want to minimise your work and ongoing costs? Look for low maintenance level, low water usage, low fertilising needs and high weed resistance.
