Watering Guide

All things water and lawn

The success of your new lawn or survival of your established lawn will always be linked to how much water it gets. This page is designed to be a singular resource for all things watering, your ultimate watering guide.

How often do I need to water my lawn?

New Lawn

Weeks 1 & 2: Water deeply 1-2 times daily.

Weeks 3 & 4: Water deeply every second day.

Weeks 5 & 6: Water deeply twice a week.

Week 7 onwards: Water deeply once per week.

Leaf must be kept continually moist throughout establishment period.
It is always best to water deeply less frequently rather than lightly more frequently. Deep and less frequent watering promotes healthier root growth.

A great starting point for ‘deep watering’ is 25mm of water. This of course depends on local weather conditions.
A great ‘life hack’ for watering your lawn is to use a clear plastic container to measure how much water your sprinkler is putting down.

Simply put a mark on the container at the 25mm level and time how long it takes to fill the container up to that mark. You now know how long to leave your sprinkler on.
Both heat from the sun and wind can increase evaporation robbing your lawn of moisture.

To reduce this effect on your watering you should always water your lawn either early in the morning or in the evening.

Don't jump to conclusions

Many customers are too quick to jump to pumping chemicals to solve issues with their lawn. They too quickly assume that their lawn is suffering from a pest or a disease.

By far the most common problem we see when dealing with lawns is lack of water. At the first sign of a possible issue we always recommend to pump the water in as quickly as possible.

You can then start testing for pests and disease, but first and foremost a well watered lawn is a healthy lawn.

Get the right lawn care and equipment

While it would be wonderful if every customer installed a full irrigation system that runs automatically off of a timer system, this just isn’t realistic.

There are a myriad of other sprinkler options, many of which are very effective and will always be superior to hand watering.

The best option we always recommend though is the classic soaker hose. They are extremely effective at getting the water where it is needed by keeping the water low and great at covering lawns of all shapes and sizes.
