With the shorter Winter days it is a great excuse to pull out that favourite jacket you never get to wear, but your lawn isn’t as appreciative of the change of climate. This week’s turf tip we look at what changes to your lawn heading into Winter.
Winter is the perfect time for fighting Winter weeds because you can control them before they produce their seeds and spread further. Weeds thrive in Winter so it’s important to stay on top of them. Remember when applying weedkiller to always do this in the morning as the products work best with a full day of sun.
Wait for dew to dissipate before applying. With weeds like nutgrass it’s important to get the nut as well as the leaf above ground. Some weeds require several applications, follow manufacturer’s instructions.
These weeds can be controlled with Amgrow Bin-Die herbicide which can be found at Bunnings and is safe for all of our turf varieties such as 格兰奇爵士草皮 to DNA Sir Walter Buffalo to TIFTUF草皮 and also Nullarbor couch.

The unique climate in South East Queensland means we don’t feel the full effects of Winter dormancy, but the tips for dormancy are still good to follow. Warm weather grasses like couch go dormant in Winter and can lose colour and will grow less.
It’s important to raise your mower blades and leave more leaf through Winter to help the lawn cope. The longer leaf will allow your lawn to maintain a high enough level of photosynthesis with the shorter days.
If you want your lawn green for a special event despite the weather you can use a LSA’s Colour Guard, feel free to call us for more information on this product.
When we see further cooling in the weather, it will be time to start your Winter preparations. With less growing and less heat your lawn needs less water. So save on the bills and dial back your watering schedule. We recommend a deep watering every 2 weeks through Winter.
If you have a lawn variety that goes dormant through Winter and you want a luscious lawn year round there is a solution. Fertilising ahead of Winter replenishes these nutrients before the cold sets in. A fertiliser high in potassium is especially good protection for the Winter months.
You can oversow a cool season grass like Ryegrass. You simply spread the seed over your existing lawn. This will flourish through Winter, before dying off when the weather warms up just as your existing lawn comes back to life.
